The Louisiana flag contains two elements: a crest centered on a blue field. The crest consists of a nest bearing three pelican chicks, a mother pelican with her head turned to the viewer's right. The mother pelican is vulning (wounding) herself to feed her chicks with her own blood and there are three drops of blood on her breast. Beneath the nest a white banner bears the state motto "Union Justice Confidence" in blue lettering.
