The Iowa state flag consists of three vertical stripes of blue, white and red, with the middle white stripe twice the width of the red and blue stripes. The blue stripe stands for loyalty, justice and truth; the white for purity; and the red for courage. On the white center stripe a bald eagle is carrying in its beak blue streamers inscribed with the state motto: "Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain" which is taken from the Seal of Iowa. The word Iowa is in red below the streamers.
Iowa flags for outdoor use are constructed of a durable nylon fabric especially developed for flag use. Nylon's tight weave provides maximum beauty and flyability as well as brilliant, fast colors. Its weave helps shed pollution, dirt and grime that the looser weave alternatives absorb. Nylon is water repellent and mildew resistant.
